Tottenham star Yves Bissouma was sprayed in the face with tear gas by thieves who made off with the midfielder’s £260,000 watch in a shock attack while on holiday in France.

The Mali star was staying at a five-star resort in Cannes with his wife but was subject to a nightmare ordeal outside the Majestic Barriere hotel at around 4am on Sunday morning.

Bissouma was pounced on by two robbers wearing hoodies after getting out of his car on the Promenade de la Croisette. And when attempting to flee to safety inside the hotel, one of the men allegedly sprayed tear gas in Bissouma’s face before stealing a watch worth an estimated £260,000. The men then raced away in a separate car.

French police are investigating while Bissouma and his wife returned to London after cutting their holiday short. He did not sustain any significant injuries in the attack but is understandably upset and shaken.

A Spurs spokesperson said: "We are aware of the incident that took place and we will continue to check on the welfare of Yves and his family."

Bissouma joined the north London club in the summer of 2022 in a £30m deal from Brighton, where he spent four seasons.

Last winter the 27-year-old contracted malaria while at the Africa Cup of Nations but overcame the potentially serious illness to remain a key player for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

He is the latest footballer to be targeted by robbers with a spate of incidents across England in the past 12 months. England star Jack Grealish, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and West Ham captain Kurt Zouma have all been victims of robberies.
