Charlie Stayt is one of the BBC's most familiar faces but chooses to keep his off-screen life under wraps.
Shooting to fame as a presenter on BBC Breakfast, which he joined in 2006 alongside Naga Munchetty and ITV star Susanna Reid, Charlie is also at the helm of his own TV and broadcasting company, Stayt Limited, with his wife Anne.
As of July 2023, Charlie is said to earn between £190k and £194,999 a year for his presenting role on the BBC, while co-star Naga takes home between £335,000 and £339,999 each year. Here's everything you need to know about the TV star.
Humble beginnings
As mentioned, Charlie is best known for his hosting role on BBC Breakfast, but he had actually set his sights on radio before becoming a household name.
Hailing from Gloucester, the 61-year-old was educated at the King's School before going to Birmingham Polytechnic. He then kicked off his career on commercial radio in his home town before eventually moving to London, where he presented Capital Radio's news show, The Way It Is. Charlie also worked for LBC and BBC Radio 5 Live.
Happy Valley's James Norton teases Tommy's 'deep hatred' in final seriesAfter finding his mark, Charlie decided to conquer the small screen, beginning his TV career at ITV in 1995. He was then a reported for Fine News before presenting its prime-time bulletins and live debates. But he also covered the Millennium celebrations and the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Charlie spent a decade on ITN, both as a correspondent and presenter, before being recruited by Sky News, and hosted live reality TV shows Jailbreak and Are You Telepathic?
He initially joined BBC One's breakfast show as a relief presenter but, in December 2007, he was confirmed as a weekend presenter, taking up his duties the following year. Charlie now hosts the program from Thursday to Saturday with Naga and stood in for Dan Walker in 2002, following his exit from the show.
A private family man
Although he remains in the spotlight, Charlie keeps his personal life under wraps. To avoid any prying eyes, the presenter seems to have sworn off Instagram, where celebs have taken the habit of sharing insights into their day-to-day.
Despite the mystery around his off-screen life, Charlie is known to be married to Anne Breckell, with the couple tying the knot in 1995, before he earned recognition for his work.
While not much is known about Anne, as she appears to be just as discreet as her other half, she is thought to be British, working as a radio personality and an actress, according to The Daily Mail. On the other hand, The Sun has added that she even works as "a manager at a global corporation."
Anne and Charlie welcomed their first child in 1997, a daughter named Phoebe. She was followed by a brother named Jake three years later.
The family are said to live in Twickenham in South West London, with Anne and Charlie owning a £2.3million four-bedroom home, bought in 2002 for the price of £800k.
