Sam Smith rocked the Met Gala last night sporting a shimmering sheer skirt and a dapper handlebar moustache.
The Grammy winner, 31, attended the star-studded event at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City with their boyfriend, Christian Cowan, 28.
Paying homage to the 'Garden of time' theme, Sam, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, donned a simple black blazer and matching trousers, which was designed by Christian. However, putting their signature twist on the outfit, the singer completed the look with a white shirt with a baby blue satin tie - coupled with a sheer skirt. They also made sure their facial hair was preened to perfection, sporting a fabulous handlebar moustache.
Fashion designer Christian opted for a cream ensemble with a brown tie while the couple both had metal roses pinned to their jackets, with Sam opting for silver and Christian plumping for gold.
They later explained their outfits had been inspired by the 1940s while the roses were a nod to a gift Christian had given Sam early in their relationship.
Two huge pop stars will perform smash hit at Brit Awards next monthChristian told Vogue's red carpet co-hosts Ashley Graham and Gwendoline Christie: "Because it’s supposed to be about back in time, we wanted to reference the 1940s, Oscar Wilde — a queer icon. We’re both queer and British so an English rose, I thought was perfect." He continued: "And early on in our days, I gave Sam a metal plated rose."
Speaking of their pride at wearing one of their boyfriend's custom designs, Sam said they "always feel beautiful" when wearing Christian's clothing. They gushed: "I couldn’t have dreamed of a better companion for the occasion. I think of the Gala as fashion Christmas—just as fabulous and just as serious, given the incredible work done at the Met."
This year's Met Gala dress code was Garden of Time, which stems from the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's the latest exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The annual "fashion Christmas" event has a strict dress code, which Vogue guru Anna Wintour approves. She also chooses a mix of celebrities to help organise the event. This year, Bad Bunny, Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Lopez were part of the chair committee.
While Sam hit the headlines with their partner on Monday, WAP star Cardi B left fans open-mouthed when nine assistants had to help carry and arrange the tulle train of her long black dress.
Elsewhere, Rita Ora got tongues wagging when she joined her husband Taika Waititi on the red carpet, wearing nothing but colourful streamers. She wore a leotard underneath, as the ribbons in the back barely covered her bum. Thor director Taika walked beside her with a full brown leather suit.
Fans were divided with Rita's outrageous look. Some thought she was giving off Bianca Censori vibes while others compared her outfit to "hotel curtains" or "party streamers" and likened her wet-look hair style to a "wet poodle".
