Air fryers have become a staple part of the kitchen for many, but cleaning them can be a nightmare.

If you're someone who uses your air fryer more often than your oven, you'll know how much of a pain it can be to clean the appliance after every use. While you might leave your oven a couple of months - or longer, let's face it - between cleans, you can't do the same with an air fryer.

But according to appliance experts, you don't need to break the bank on expensive cleaning products or spend hours scrubbing at the inside of your air fryer, as there's an easy homemade cleaning solution that can banish grime in no time.

The cleaning experts at Hiatt Hardware said there are "five simple steps" to cleaning an air fryer, and they couldn't be easier to follow. In fact, step one is just to ensure the appliance is turned off and unplugged so you can clean it without accidentally burning yourself or causing electrical accidents.

Step two is to clean the air fryer basket, which is the removable compartment of your appliance. All you need to do is submerge them in warm, soapy water and then tackle them with a sponge. The experts said you should make sure to pay close attention to any stubborn-looking areas where residue may have built up, but the soapy water should do a decent enough job of lifting most of the grease and grime.

The "trusty, DIY cleaning solution" comes in step three. This still involves cleaning the baskets, but ensures you go the "extra mile" to clean "stubborn areas and grime stains". The cleaning solution is made up of equal parts white vinegar and water, and you simply soak your baskets in the solution and wait for the grime to shift. All that's left to do is wipe down the baskets.

After your baskets are completely clean, you can move on to step four - wiping down the heating unit. Your air fryer must be fully cooled down for this step, but all you need to do is use a slightly damp cloth to wipe over the heating coil inside your appliance. Pay close attention to any splatters as these can harbour bacteria for long periods. If you find that "grease is stubborn inside the coil", you can upgrade to a dish brush, making sure you get inside every gap of the coil.

Finally, step five is simply to dry each of the parts that you cleaned and put your air fryer back together again. Once reassembled, you can set your air fryer in its usual home on your counter or in a cupboard ready for the next use.
