Thousands of people claiming benefits will receive a one off £288.60 payment today.

The one off payment will be given to people living in Scotland and claiming Carer's Allowance. Carer's Allowance is a benefit which is paid to people who provide care for someone else. To claim it, you need to be caring for someone for at least 35 hours a week - this can include helping them with everyday tasks such as washing, managing bills, or taking them to doctor's appointments. It's currently worth £81.90 a week or £327 every four weeks.

The benefit is paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) but in Scotland, they also have the Carer's Support Payment which is managed and paid by Social Security Scotland. According to data from Social Security Scotland, around 84,000 people are claiming the carers benefit in the country.

The rules of this benefit and the payment rates are the same however carers based in Scotland also receive another two payments called "Carer's Allowance Supplements". These are two payments worth £288.60 and are set to be paid in June and December of this year. In a recent post to X, Social Security Scotland said the supplement would be paid today on June 7.

According to Social Security Scotland's website, the payment will be made to those who were claiming the benefit on April 8 this year. The cash will be paid automatically to those who claim so they do not need to apply for the supplement payment. It will also be paid directly into the bank account where your benefit is usually paid.

If you are eligible for the payment, you will receive a letter before the payment is made. if you have not received on by June 17, then you should contact Social Security Scotland on 0800 182 2222. The second winter payment will be given to those claiming a carer's benefit on October 7 - the exact date for this payment has not been confirmed.

Social Security Scotland says the payment will not affect your other benefits and you do not need to report it to the DWP or your council. In Scotland, Carer Support Payment will gradually replace Carer's Allowance for everyone already claiming the DWP benefit.

New claims for Carer's Allowance were replaced by the Scottish payment in November 2023 for people living in Dundee City, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles and is set to launch in 10 more council areas this summer - the phased rollout will start with North and South Lanarkshire and Angus on June 24. From August it will extend to Fife, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and North, East and South Ayrshire and be available in the rest of Scotland in November.

Carer Support Payment is only available to new claimants - people already receiving Carer’s Allowance from the DWP will not be affected by the rollout and will have their current award transferred over to Social Security Scotland in stages.
