Young woman in 20s knocked unconscious in 'brutal late-night attack'

A woman in her 20s was punched unconscious in a "horrific late-night attack".

The victim was rushed to hospital after the assault, which happened at around 1am on Sunday June 9 in Gloucester city centre. Police were called to reports of a man striking a woman on Wellington Street, near Gloucester Park and the city's war memorial. The woman remained in hospital this afternoon as she undergoes treatment. A man, meanwhile, has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident, reports Gloucestershire Live.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police confirmed the 23-year-old man, from Gloucester, was detained and the force is continuing its investigation. He added: "Officers are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has any relevant information to come forward. Information can be provided online by completing this form and quoting incident 29 of 9 June."

Elsewhere this weekend, a man was shoved down a flight of stairs in another late-night horror. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is now searching for leads, and has appealed for information following the alleged attack on the 52-year-old man in Altrincham on Saturday June 8 at around 2pm.

The man suffered life-changing injuries, police say. No arrests have been made at this stage. Investigation chief Detective Inspector Andrew Langlands of Salford CID said: "This was a cowardly attack which left a man with serious injuries. Our investigation is moving at pace, and we are undertaking exhaustive enquiries to identify and arrest the person - or persons responsible."
