A crab has been spotted playing with a turtle at the beach - but not just any turtle.

For this fun-loving crustacean was seen wielding a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles PEZ dispenser. The Donatello-themed device was held proudly aloft in the crab's left pincer as it stood amongst a crate of mussels.

Sharing the snap to the r/mildlyinteresting subreddit, a Reddit user captioned the post: "My friend's dad found a crab holding a Donatello PEZ Dispenser." It prompted fellow users to ponder how and why the crab had come to possess the kids' treat.

"Now I'm wondering if the crab used this as a threat display to fend off predators as well as other crabs during territorial disputes," speculated one person. Another suggested: "He’s asking for a refill on the Pezzzzz mannnn." And a third believed the crab could be posing for a potential "Time Magazine cover" shoot.

Other Reddit users were keen for the crab to have been set free. One said: "He's offering up a bribe to let him go! Please say he threw him back!" Another said: "I think throwing it back is the right thing to do. I'd say we should encourage more crabs to do this. Think of how they could clean up the ocean?"

And thankfully, it appears that is what happened as the friend mentioned in the original post weighed in. They wrote: "As said friend in post I can say crab is continuing his crime fighting journey with Donnie."

Embodying the crab, another Reddit user quipped on its behalf: "Humans! I have come with this offering you have given us from so long ago! My ancestors have passed it down along generations and now it is my honor to be here to give this to you, which is clearly one of your gods because you made it so indestructible that the most powerful thing on the planet, the ocean, could not end its existence. take this offering of friendship!"
