Manchester City's players aren't believed to have been at the hotel when the fireworks went off

Arsenal fans' efforts to disturb Manchester City's title push were taken to new measures, with supporters setting off fireworks outside what they believed to be the hotel housing Pep Guardiola's players, but their plan backfired.

City are down in London on Tuesday night for a Premier League game away at Tottenham. It's a game in hand for Guardiola's team, who sit a point adrift of Arsenal but know two wins from their final two matches would see them crowned champions.

While Gunners fans targeted the reigning champions' hotel, there were immediate question marks over whether City stayed there the night before the game. The Spurs match kicks off at 8pm on Tuesday evening, and sure enough, according to BBC Sport, the Manchester club are heading down on the day of the game.

Whether or not City's players were directly affected by the antics, those staying at the hotel in question had a disturbed night's sleep. There was a mixed reception to the behaviour, with a few taking aim at the perpetrators.

"For an 8pm kick-off. Their mums and dads waiting for them in the car park will be mortified…" one said on social media. "This is such a weird thing that’s started to happen," was the reaction from another.

City fans appeared unbothered by the goings-on. "And tonight we show them the fireworks on the pitch," wrote one, while even one Arsenal fan said "We’re not the brightest bunch at times are we".

Another City supporter even shared a screenshot of flight departures, which they claimed supported the argument that the squad were only slated to fly down in the morning. It's not the first time something like this has happened, though.

One such example came on the eve of the Euro 2020 final, when England fans set off fireworks outside the hotel where opponents Italy were staying. It wasn't enough to sway the eventual result, though, with Gareth Southgate's team famously suffering a painful penalty shoot-out defeat.

“We have something unique in front of our eyes [but] in the beginning of the season, no, we didn’t think at all about winning four Premier Leagues,” City boss Pep Guardiola told reporters in the lead-up to the Spurs game. “But always there has to be something.

“When we were in February, March, April, it was ‘Oh, we are still there - we can do it’ and that ignited something in all our heads to say ‘Guys, no team has done it.’ That shows how difficult it is.

"Liverpool in the 1980s, United with Sir Alex Ferguson in the 90s, Chelsea with [Roman] Abramovich and Jose [Mourinho] - even Arsenal with [Arsene] Wenger - they haven’t done it. They haven’t done it as it’s so difficult… it’s as simple as that."

If City beat Spurs, they will know victory at home to West Ham on the final day will see them crowned champions for a fourth straight season. Anything less than two wins, though, and Arsenal will pip them if they can beat Everton on May 19.
