Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has been appointed as new head coach of Red Bull Salzburg.
The Dutchman, who will leave the Reds alongside Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season, was announced as the new first-team boss of the Austria Bundesliga side on Wednesday afternoon. He has signed a three-year contract running until the summer of 2027 and will be assisted by Victor Matos.
Lijnders is set to take charge at the start of pre-season as Salzburg prepare for the new campaign. "I am very proud to become the new head coach of FC Red Bull Salzburg," said Lijnders.
"This is a real privilege for me. After PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto and Liverpool FC, I am now moving to another exceptional club with a really good structure and a particular focus on youth development.
"I want to develop a mentality with the team that places a lot of emphasis on attacking style of play and where passion and hunger for success are the basis of everything.
Jurgen Klopp's approach with Robert Lewandowski bodes well for Darwin Nunez"Together with my assistant coach Vitor Matos and the entire support team, we will do our best to help the club continue to grow in an ever-changing football world.
"My family has visited the city before and was overwhelmed by its beauty and the friendliness of the people. That was the last and important step for me in choosing FC Red Bull Salzburg."
Lijnders arrived at the Reds in 2014 as Under 16s coach in the club's academy, before being promoted to become a first-team development coach a year later. He initially worked under Brendan Rodgers in that position and remained in that position when Klopp was appointed in October 2015.
Following a stint in charge of NEC Nijmegen in his homeland, Lijnders returned to Liverpool as assistant manager at the start of the 2018/19. He played a pivotal role in the club winning the Champions League, before they won the Premier League for the first time in the following campaign.
He has spent six years as assistant to Klopp and the duo will leave the Reds after their final game of the season against Wolves on Sunday. It's poised to be an emotional afternoon for all involved, with Liverpool now guaranteed to finish third in the Premier League table.
Matos, who has worked as elite development coach at Liverpool for the last four-and-half years, will join Lijnders to complete a new-look management team.
