London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has labelled Donald Trump as a "racist, sexist, and a homophobe", urging his own Labour Party to "call him out."
Last week, the Labour Party, which is currently on track to win the next election, according to polls, seemed to extend an olive branch to the former president, who is making yet another bid for the White House, when foreign affairs chief David Lammy stated that Trump was "often misunderstood" regarding policy.
Despite being a vocal critic of Trump in the past, Lammy has been forging connections with key Republicans in Washington as Labour anticipates gaining power. However, Khan, who admitted he had "more latitude" than some colleagues to express his views freely, told Politico that Trump was far from "misunderstood." "I'm quite clear, I understand on Trump," Khan declared.

And it's very important, particularly when you've got a special relationship, that you treat them as a best mate. If my best mate was a racist, or a sexist or a homophobe, I'd call him out and I'd explain to him why those views are wrong. "
Polls suggest that Trump, the presumed Republican nominee for this year's US presidential election, stands a good chance of returning to the Oval Office for a second term. The Labour Party also appears on the brink of government and is increasingly aware that it may have to cooperate with a potential second Trump administration. However, London's mayor, fresh from securing an unprecedented third term this month, expressed his concerns.
"I worry about a Donald Trump presidency. You know, I've been speaking to governors from America. I've been speaking to mayors from America. Of course, we'll have a relationship whoever the president is. But we shouldn't be literally rolling out a red carpet for a state visit," Khan stated.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining balanced relations: "It's really important that we of course, have good relations with Democrats and Republicans. But I lost count of the amount of Republicans I've spoken to who are also worried about a Trump presidency."
The history of animosity between Khan and Trump dates back to 2015, escalating over the years. In 2016, Trump challenged Khan to an IQ test after Khan criticised his views on Muslims as "ignorant." Prior to his 2019 state visit to London, Trump lambasted Khan on social media, calling him a "stone cold loser" and "very dumb."
Unfazed by Trump's insults and fresh from his third electoral win, Khan said: "Listen, I've got more latitude as a mayor to just to say what I feel about Trump, and I make this point. He called me a 'stone cold loser'. I've won three. How many has he won?"
