Cheryl Baker insists The Fizz certainly won't be going flat following Mike Nolan's shock announcement that he's leaving the band.

The pop group, originally named Bucks Fizz, shot to fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with their catchy bop Making Your Mind Up and a dazzling performance that included some iconic rip off skirts. In recent years, the band have been continuing to perform – with three of the original members Cheryl, Mike, 69, and Jay Aston.

But Mike is stepping away for personal reasons - and that has cast doubt over the future of the group and if they can carry on. However, Cheryl has a message for the fans and speaking to the Mirror on behalf of Heart Bingo, she said the show must go on - because she's not ready to pack away the colourful gear quite yet.

"We're still gigging, we're going throughout the summer," she said. "Mike is leaving, his last one is on November 20. We've been having meetings about what we're doing for the final farewell. We won't be doing it at a big theatre, but somewhere close to our homes. We might need to do more than one night, who knows.

"We've got festivals and 80s weekends and a gig at the Indigo. We're carrying on. I'm not ready to retire. I love my work too much. Jay and I will carry on. Maybe we'll replace Mike with one or two people, we've not decided yet. The 80s is still huge - there's events going on all the time. While there's still people who love acts from the 80s, I still want to be a part of it. I want to carry on."

Appearing on last Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain, Mike opened up about his decision to leave as he joined his fellow band members in the studio. He said: "It's actually personal reasons why I'm leaving but also as well I was getting fed up with the amount of travelling you've got to do.

"Everyone has to travel but because I can't drive anymore, I've got to get into a cab, onto a train, onto another train, meet up with the band, do the gig, stay overnight, two trains back, another cab and forty years of it..." The rest of the band then revealed that Mike has been talking about leaving for the last three years.

They joked they would comment: "Just go, for goodness' sake!", although they added: "Of course, it's not going to be the same." The group issued an "important notice" on X to let fans know the news. The statement read: "We can confirm, following the Michael Ball show, that Mike will be leaving the group at the end of the year. Cheryl & Jay will be continuing as 'The Fizz' & a statement from Mike, will follow in the coming days. Thank you for your understanding."
