Neighbours heard gunshots 'like firecrackers' as woman dead and man arrested

A man has been arrested after a 78-year-old woman was found dead in Edinburgh as residents reported hearing "gunshots" that sounded "like fireworks".

Police locked down Fernieside Crescent in the Scottish capital following reports of gunfire this morning. Officers and ambulance crews raced to the road at about 8:25am today, where the woman was treated at the scene. Despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead. A 36-year-old man had been apprehended in connection with the death.

Officers and investigators were seen at nearby Moredun Park Road at about 2pm this afternoon. Some three ambulances and several police cars were seen close by.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "This was an isolated incident and officers remain in the area to provide public reassurance and anyone with concerns should speak to officers. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

Neighbours described hearing gunshots "like fireworks" in the area. One resident told The Daily Record: "We heard about eight or more loud shots, it was like firecrackers going off, hard and sharp. Then we saw armed police go in to the house with shields and guns. Soon after we saw a man brought out in handcuffs. It was all over quickly, about half an hour. We heard on the police radio that a pensioner had died. It was so scary at the time."

Other residents also claimed that a building was cordoned off with the area being on lockdown. According to EdinburghLive, the exact circumstances that lead up to the reported gunfire of the is not known.

A large emergency response team remains in the area. Locals told The Scottish Sun the "gunshots" were captured on a Ring doorbell as officers arrived this morning. They added more than 20 emergency services vehicles were seen at the site of the alleged shooting. Residents told the outlet the video captured the moment police opened fire. Footage reportedly showed an officer walking through a garden before five apparent shots were heard. Another six were heard just a few seconds later.

One resident, who did not want to be named told The Scottish Sun: "I heard screams not long after I got up. It seemed unusual but I thought nothing more about it. A while later I heard more sirens and saw armed cops on the street. I was told to stay inside and I could heard them shouting a someone. Then there were several gunshots, a dozen maybe, all within a couple of minutes."

Local businesses warned customers about a "major incident" in the area. According to The Daily Record, Nicola Brown Hair said: "Just a heads up for clients coming to the salon today there has been a major incident on Moredun Park Road coming fromFerniside way the road is closed off, please use alternative route via Gilmerton to get to the salon."

Auld Rekkie Raw added: "To our lovely customers, the street to our shop is closed off. To get to the shop by car, you have to come from the bottom end of Moredun and then the bottom end of Fernieside Crescent and follow the road right around."
