Gary Lineker paid a 'subtle' yet deeply touching tribute to Dario G star Paul Spencer on Monday night, less than 24 hours after his death aged 53 was confirmed.

The last of the opening matches of Euro 2024 saw 2016 champions Portugal, led by 39-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo, take on Czech Republic. Despite Ronaldo's team being the top scorers in qualification and their opponents the lowest, predictions of an easy win for Portugal were off the mark, with the underdogs taking the lead.

Portugal managed to level the score before thinking they'd taken a 2-1 lead, only for that goal to be disallowed. Victory eventually went to Roberto Martinez's side, thanks to a close range effort from substitute Francisco Conceicao in injury time.

After the final whistle, BBC cameras returned to Lineker and colleagues Alan Shearer, Cesc Fabregas and Frank Lampard in the studio to give their verdict, as well as briefly discuss England's upcoming Euros match against Denmark on Thursday.

In his summary of the match in the closing moments, Gary referred to Portugal's match winner as 'ConceiWOW', as highlights of the game were then shown. The song chosen to accompany the clips, which was Dario G's iconic Sunchyme tune, immediately resonated with many viewers at home.

A fan, posting on X, reacted to Match of the Day playing Sunchyme and wrote: "Classy tribute to Dario G here". Another person chimed in, "Don't know who's idea it was to play out @BBCMOTD with Dario G but it was a lovely touch". Indeed, fans were in agreement that it was a subtle yet classy tribute from Lineker to close out the show.

Late on Monday night, the world learnt of the passing of Dario G, whose real name was Paul Spencer, at the age of 53. The news was shared via a touching post on the artist's Instagram page saying: "He was positive until the end but this was one battle he could not fight any more. He leaves behind a wonderful musical legacy and many happy memories".

Dario G's biggest hit was Sunchyme, released in 1997. The popular tune was followed up by the still well-played football anthem Carnival De Paris, which was released for World Cup 1998.

British DJ Sigala also hailed the late star as a “true inspiration”. In the comments of the Instagram post Sigala, real name Bruce Fielder, 31, who is known for hits including Came Here For Love and Sweet Lovin’, said the DJ had encouraged him to get himself checked for cancer.

He said: “That’s so sad. A true inspiration, he brought joy to so many people and will live on forever through his music. Paul told me many times over the last year ‘Go get yourself checked’ so I’m passing on that message to anyone reading this, as I’m sure he would want me to.

“Our health should be more of a priority! He will be missed greatly. Sending love to his family, rest in peace buddy xx.”
