The 2024 UEFA Euros championship kicked off for England with a 1-0 win against Slovenia, and tonight the team will go up against Denmark in the next group-stage match. Amid fans rushing to get official footie shirts and merch, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted an accessory a lot of the squad are wearing.
The Oura tracking ring is a smart accessory that measures wearers' health and fitness, offering similar qualities to that of a smartwatch but bundled into a piece of jewellery...and without a touchscreen display of course. Its top features include sleep tracking, keeping an eye on daily activity goals, identifying stress on the body and even monitoring heart rate and temperature.
So, you can see why professional athletes (and keen home fitness fanatics) are snapping up the discreet piece of tech. Ahead of the first England Euros match midfielder Connor Gallagher was spotted wearing the monitoring device during the official UEFA press event, and it's a tracking accessory favoured by manager Gareth Southgate too.

Millions blocked from iconic iPhone app forever after 10 years in major shutdownSimilar to the likes of an Apple Watch Series 9 or Galaxy Watch 6 from Samsung the Oura ring measures fitness and daily activity goals, adapting to each users' own goals (and training frequency) to adjust targets and ensure the body is getting enough recovery time.
If it's good enough for Gareth Southgate OBE then some fans may be wondering where they can get their hands on it, and how much you'd need in the bank to buy one. John Lewis sells two different models of the Oura Gen3 editions; the Health and Fitness tracking Heritage Ring and the Horizon version.
The Black Ring Gen3 Heritage Health ring is the cheapest at £299, but retailers urge all shoppers to buy the £10 Oura ring size checker kit before. This allows you to get a snug-fitting ring to ensure the body sensors work correctly, anyone who buys a pack with get the £10 kit price off the ring at the checkout.
The price of this model goes up by £100 each if you opt for the better quality pure silver or pure gold materials. That's one thing that stands out about the discreet tech device, it's just as much a quality piece of jewellery as it is a device.
Smart rings are still a relatively new product with only a fare few brands dabbling in the smart tech jewellery world. Ultrahuman ring is another brand on our radar, available to buy at Amazon, it's water resistant up to 100m and has similar fitness and sleep quality features.
Not yet offered or hinted to be in development by Apple, Samsung however do have a smart ring on the cards. Earlier this year Mirror Tech Editor Dave Snelling got a sneak peak at the Galaxy Ring, which was surprisingly displayed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Its official launch in UK stores is still not known, although thought to be soon, this is what shoppers can expect to find. As Dave highlights: "From our up close look, it appears the Galaxy Ring is full of sensors that could allow it to track your heart rate, sleep, body temperature and movement.
"Its design should also help it feel less intrusive than a smartwatch and it won't show notifications or start bleeping at you when you get a text. It's unclear if it will allow you to pay for your shopping (a bit like the Oura Ring) but that would certainly add to its appeal as you'd never need to take your wallet with you again."
