Prince William had a 'nightmare' getting to Taylor Swift's Wembley gig before he danced the night away, according to an insider.

The Prince of Wales and Taylor Swift practically broke the internet on Friday as they posed for a backstage photo together, along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The fun image quickly went viral, with the future King sharing it on his official social media, along with the caption: "Thank you @taylorswift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour."

Taylor echoed the sentiment with an adorable selfie upload of her own - also featuring her boyfriend Travis Kelce. "Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start @princeandprincessofwales." William's snapshot has racked up 2.8million likes, while Taylor's has a whopping 9.3million likes.

Indeed William celebrated his 42nd birthday by attending the first of Taylor's three London shows - and was even seen dancing away to Shake it Off, alongside his cousin Zara Tindall.

But the royal night out almost didn't happen according to one insider, who says the Prince and his children were running late for the show and nearly missed out on meeting the pop princess altogether.

"They had a nightmare getting in, they were running really late but they had planned to get there earlier so they could have the meet and greet with Taylor beforehand because they knew they wanted to leave early," they told HELLO!.

"They only had 25 minutes to spare so had a quick meet and greet and then went up to their box before the show, and there was a bit of stress and panic about that because it was taking too long."

Happily, everything fell into place and William and his children were able to meet the superstar before taking their seats in the balcony area. As the concert drew to a close, the royals had to make an early exit, leaving ten minutes before the end of the show to avoid the rush of eager Swifties.

Royal fans couldn't get enough of William's joyful appearance at the event - which has since sparked comparisons with his brother, Prince Harry.

Royal fans rushed to point out the 'contrast' between pictures and video of William dancing as he lapped up Taylor's live show at Wembley Stadium, and pictures of a glum-faced Harry when he stepped out to see Beyonce live on tour last year .

At the time Harry was seen standing with his hands thrust in his pockets looking glum-faced while the global icon performed an array of her hits for a star-studded crowd on the Renaissance Tour.

According to one expert, however, it was Princess Charlotte who was really in her element at Taylor's show.

Behavioural professional Judi James told the Mirror: "William and George wear mirrored grins here but with the angle of their heads suggesting they are shy and just a little bit in awe of Taylor," Judi noted. "Charlotte though wears a more open, symmetric and straight onto the camera grin of total delight."

Of Taylor, she added: "It's clear from Taylor's body language here that nothing fazes her. Despite just finishing her one-woman concert she looks band-box fresh here, bright-eyed and full of energy. She's also calmly leading this selfie, smiling confidently as though she poses with royals every day, as well as the current love of her life Travis."
