From back pain, to soreness caused by rubbing or chafing, wearing the wrong bra size can lead to a whole host of different issues.

Be honest - when was the last time you had your bra size measured? According to a study by Boux Avenue in 2021, only 19% of women are wearing the correct bra size. It's not uncommon for your cup or circumference size to change over time - especially after having a baby.

And some lingerie experts actually suggest getting fitted twice per year, because being comfortable is so important. Despite the fact we should be measuring regularly, a survey by Pour Moi lingerie found one in five UK women admit their last bra fitting was between six to 10 years ago.

It's clear that many put off getting their bra size refitted, perhaps because they don't have time to, feel embarrassed, or just don't know how to do it themselves. But luckily, there's a way to do it at home - and it's super quick and simple.

Tilly Tomkins, business owner of lingerie brand Nearer The Moon, recently shared a clip of herself re-measuring herself after finishing her 'feeding journey' with her baby, in the hope that others will then be able to 'accurately' measure themselves.

The London-based lingerie designer, who helped create Billie Eilish's iconic Vogue cover look with her sexy suspender belts back in 2021, explained: "So, two things you're going to want to start with - first is a non-padded bra, it can be wired or non-wired. Basically, you want to be slightly lifted, but you don't want to be adding volume. Second thing, you're going to want is a flexible, but not stretchy, tape measure."

In the demonstration, Tilly showed how she wrapped the tape measure under her ribcage/bust quite 'snugly' so it 'digs in a little bit'. "This is where all the support from your bra comes from, so you're going to want to get that nice and tight."

Next, Tilly wrapped the measuring tape around her back, making sure it's 'horizontal to the floor', and measuring "around the fullest part of your bust without squashing any of the tissue," explained Tilly. This part is "really important", as it's the way you are able to find out your cup size.

And this is the nifty hack to find your cup size - you take the smaller measurement away from the bigger measurement. For example, for Tilly, who was 32inches around the waist, and 38inches around the fullest part of her bust, she was left with the number six.

"You just count the cup sizes, it's really easy. So if there's zero difference, that's an AA cup. A, B, C, D, double D, E," added Tilly. "So that means I am now at 32E for the moment."

It's worth noting some clothing retailers use their own custom sizing system, such as Marks and Spencer, who leave out FF and HH. But in general, these are the designated cup sizes: AA-A-B-C-D-DD-E-F-FF-G-GG-H-HH-J-JJ-K-KK-L.

Over on social media people were super impressed by Tilly's simple demonstration, with one person writing: "That was a neat explanation, Thank you!" Another added: "Omg, really needed to see this."
