SAMSUNG has revealed what you should (and shouldn't) do when you see the dreaded "water drop" icon on your phone.

It usually means water has made its way into your port – and will typically block you from charging.

Most modern Samsung phones are water-resistant.

But that doesn't mean you can plug a charging cable into a wet port without consequences.

Samsung explains: "If there is water in your device’s USB port or moisture is detected that exceeds a set point, charging will not be supported.

"This is a safety measure to protect your phone from damage and corrosion.

"If your device displays a water drop icon which signifies moisture detection, you should power off your device and leave it to dry completely."

Charging should stop as soon as the moisture detection sensor is triggered.

You'll see an error message on the screen that shows a drop of water.

SHAKE IT OFF?

If you see this, don't drop your phone in rice because that does more harm than good.

Instead, use Samsung's "shake" method – just don't take it too far.

Samsung explains: "In this case, unplug your device from the charger, then wipe with a dry cloth.

"Or gently shake your device (5-10 times) with the port facing downwards to release any excess moisture.

"Place your phone on a cloth in a well-ventilated area, or dry with a fan."

But Samsung warns: "Excessive force or shaking may cause damage to your phone.

STOP THE DROP

If you're still seeing the water drop icon, it might be a technical issue.

Try updating your software or restarting your device.

Alternatively, try clearing your phone's USB cache with the following steps:

  • 1. Go to Settings > Apps > Filter and Sort
  • 2. Toggle the switch to Show System Apps then tap OK
  • 3. Scroll to USB Settings > Storage
  • 4. Tap Clear Cache

Samsung also recommends trying another cable, or switching to wireless charging while you wait for a repair.
