JOHN MOTSON was loved for his iconic commentary while wearing a classy sheepskin coat.

But the world of sport has been left in mourning after his tragic passing at age 77.

Why did John Motson wear a sheepskin coat?

Motty is widely renowned for regularly sporting a stylish sheepskin coat.

And the legendary pundit revealed that he had bought his first one when a woman invited him into her garage before showing him a load of woolly jackets on the floor.

In 2017, Motson exclusively told The Sun: “I’ve just ordered a new one for this season, I thought I would get one more in.

“I will probably keep it for a couple of years, but won’t buy any more after that.”

It quickly became Motson's customary attire and in 2018, the iconic pundit revealed how much he had to fork out for a new one.

Motson described the sheepskin by saying: “Full-length, so warm. It cost two grand."

“I’ve always paid for my own. People think the BBC pay for them but they don’t.”

What happened to John Motson?

Motson died on February 23, 2023, at the age of 77.

Motson had a long and distinguished career as sports broadcaster, best known as a commentator on Match Of The Day from 1971 to 2018.

His work spanned over 2,000 games, including 29 FA Cup finals, 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 UEFA European Championships.

The iconic commentator became one of the most familiar voices in the UK thanks to his enthusiasm and sharp wit.

And he was appointed an OBE by the Queen in her 2001 birthday honours for services to sports broadcasting.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher led the tributes, writing: "RIP John Motson.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker tweeted: "Deeply saddened to hear that John Motson has died. A quite brilliant commentator and the voice of football in this country for generations. He’ll be very much missed. RIP Motty."

Fellow commentator Clive Tyldesley movingly wrote: "As a teenager I just wanted to be John Motson. Nobody else. Terribly sad."
