A 25-year-old man, Imran Chowdury, has been charged with assisting Daniel Khalife, a former British army soldier who escaped from HMP Wandsworth in south London in September 2023.

Khalife, who had been accused of spying for Iran while serving with the Royal Signals Regiment, used a food delivery truck to make his daring escape.

The breakout led to a massive manhunt involving dozens of officers, helicopters, and a £20,000 reward for information. Khalife was recaptured 75 hours later by a plain-clothes officer on a canal towpath.

Chowdury, from Chingford, was arrested in January 2024 and charged in December with assisting an escaped prisoner. He is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

Police confirmed no further action would be taken against a 25-year-old woman arrested in February on suspicion of aiding an offender.
