Office US star Rainn Wilson slams 'anti-Christian bias' in The Last Of Us

Rainn Wilson has criticised The Last Of Us for spreading "anti-Christian bias" after the programme showed a group of cannibals being led by a Christian preacher.

The Office US star, 57, took to Twitter after watching the penultimate episode of the HBO series which focused on a preacher called David (played by Scott Shepherd).

Spoiler alert, the character turned out to be the main villain of the episode and attempted to sexually assault Ellie (Bella Ramsey), before she managed to make her escape.

"I do think there is an anti-Christian bias in Hollywood," Rainn tweeted after sitting down to watch the episode.

"As soon as the David character in 'The Last of Us' started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain."

"Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?" he questioned.

Rainn, who is not a Christian himself, added: "Of course it's true that the evangelical/political coalition is doing a great deal of damage to our country.

"Banning books - banning freedoms - denying inconvenient science, taking a grotesque anti-LGBTQ+ platform…

"But most Christians that I know are kind, accepting and loving and seeking to make the world a better place. They should also be honored in the media."

Rainn's fans seemed to agree with his criticisms, with one person commenting: "Its a huge trope that I would hope tv/movies would avoid for a while.

"Any character that is overly religious or a preacher I just assume is a villain in the show/movie."

Another said: "Well said. You’re awesome, Rainn. Keep advocating for a better world."

However, other people pointed out that the character in fact turned out not to be a Christian preacher.

One fan commented: "Did you stop watching the episode after that? Or did you miss the fact that he wasn’t actually Christian and only assumed that role so he could have power in the community?"

Another said: "Yeah I was gonna say, the entire point of that character was that he had only recently assumed the role of a Christian so he could wield power and manipulate others to do his bidding because he was a bad person.
