Now we're over a week into 2023, many people will be looking to re-vamp their cleaning routines and try to keep pesky issues like mould at bay. One place you may not think about mould lurking is within your washing machine, which can be seriously detrimental to the appliance, your clothes and your health.

Black mould requires pure water to develop - this is the moisture that is crated on a cold surface when warm moist air meets it and condenses. Poor ventilation tends to be the most common cause of this issue, hence why it can be common in washing machines, as they're rarely aired out and stay moist.

But how can you get rid of it? One woman took to a Facebook group 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' to ask for help with cleaning her washing machine as she had noticed black mould inside it and was desperate to get rid of it.

She wrote: "I now have really bad black mould on my washing machine seal and I've tried everything from washing machine cleaners, citrus wipes to bleach, it just looks so grubby and nothing is working any help with this would be great thanks."

Mrs Hinch fans came to the rescue, and someone recommended a £1 bathroom staple to get rid of the spores.

They wrote: "Mouthwash!! Lay kitchen towel on the rubber part, pour mouthwash over it leave overnight then wipe."

Mouthwash can be bought from Sainsbury's for just 80p for its own brand.

Someone else complained: "I can never get my seal back to its original colour as the black has stained the grey rubber. I really don't understand why they don't make the seal black!"

Another suggested: "Have you tried an empty boil wash? I always leave the door open after every use to let the drum etc dry out."

Would you try mouthwash to get rid of black mould? Let us know in the comments.
