Spurs legend Chris Waddle has demanded the club refund the travelling fans who witnessed their 6-1 thrashing at Newcastle.

The ex-England winger says Daniel Levy should issue an official apology for the shameful performance which saw Cristian Stellini’s side five goals down in the first 21 minutes. Waddle left St James’ Park fuming at what he’d witnessed from his former side who he follows closely and still cares about.

And he reckons they made a mistake in letting Stellini take charge after his boss Antonio Conte left last month. Newcastle smashed Tottenham to go six points plus a superior goal difference ahead clear of their top four rivals, with a game in hand.

Spurs face Manchester United this week, with Stellini left with “no words” to explain the lack of fight on Tyneside. Waddle blasted: “I want the club to apologise to the fans and to reimburse them.

‌“They should get their money back. It was a shambles. It was that bad. They made a 600 mile trip to see players do that.

“[Antonio] Conte has it right about this lot. They don’t like pressure, they don’t like hard work. They didn’t turn up in that first 20 minutes.‌

“Newcastle and Spurs are similar clubs. I’ve played for them both. When you pull on those shirts it gets your heart pumping faster. It should mean something.

“But look at the goals: Spurs players standing watching, half-hearted headers, no tackling, watching Newcastle players run through the defence on goal.”

Waddle has named the man who he thinks should have been put in temporary charge for the rest of the season. He added: “Why let Conte go and put his assistant who plays the same way in charge.

“I’d have had Harry Redknapp in charge and told them to have a go. Spurs' tradition is the same as Newcastle’s - they like some entertainment.

“This is a side who are fifth, not a relegation club. A side who almost beat Milan in the Champions League.”

There were chants of “We want Levy out”, from the away end. A stony-faced Spurs chairman made his way from the boardroom to the tunnel, but didn’t appear to pay the players a visit on his way out of St James’ Park.

Stellini, whose side have only won two of their last seven league games, admitted: “We have to analyse that this season is very tough for everyone and we have to find the energy with all the possibilities we have. We don’t have a lot of time to do this. We have to be responsible and take a breath. We have an important game Thursday and we have to show something."
