A HUGE whale washed up on a beach where the carcass of another dead 20-footer horrified locals a fortnight ago.

The badly decomposed minke whale was spotted on North Berwick’s West Beach on Sunday by members of the public, who raised the alarm.

East Lothian Council confirmed a cordon was put in place and said the beast had since been removed.

A spokesman added: “It is 18ft (6m) long, and initial investigations show no obvious signs of injury such as entanglement of struck by boat.

“It was first spotted out at sea on Friday afternoon and washed ashore overnight.”

Last month, a dead minke whale - a female, measuring 31ft - came ashore on the same stretch of beach.

A recovery effort was launched by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), alongside East Lothian’s Countryside Rangers.

BDMLR took samples in a bid to determine the cause of death, although there was no “entanglement or evidence of a propeller or boat strike”.

A marine expert previously spoke to the Scottish Sun about the importance of looking after Scottish waters.

Dr Lyndsey Dodds highlighted the key part Scotland’s seas play for migrating whales.
