CHANCES are WhatsApp is one of your most used apps - and it probably eats through the most amount of data too.

All those videos, GIFs and pictures will gobble through your allowance pretty fast, not to mention any WhatsApp video or audio calls too.

This increases the likelihood of having to buy more data to get you through the month, which doesn't come cheap.

Fortunately, WhatsApp has some little-used settings that could spare you from using up masses of data too quickly.

And they only take 30 seconds to switch on.

So why not give them a go?

How to save data on WhatsApp

The first way you can save data on WhatsApp is by changing the download settings.

You can tell WhatsApp to only download certain files when you're connected to Wi-Fi.

So when you're out and about, things like photos won't appear until you're hooked up to Wi-Fi.

This might be annoying at times but chances are, when you're out and about, you'll come across some free Wi-Fi somewhere that you can quickly connect to to download anything you wish to see sooner rather than later.

You can switch media auto-download settings for four types of data: photos, audio, video and documents.

To tweak them, start by opening WhatsApp and going to the Settings.

Tap on Storage and Data.

You'll see each of the categories listed under the header "Media Auto-Download".

Select each one and choose Wi-Fi.

How to use less data for calls on WhatsApp

If you love using your WhatsApp to make calls that too will use up loads of data.

It's probably better to use your network minutes instead.

But that may not always be the case - perhaps you have family abroad, in which case WhatsApp is the much cheaper option.

WhatsApp does have a way which uses less data for calls you should switch on.

Go back to the Storage and Data page.

Look for Use Less Data for Calls and turn the toggle to on.
