DRIVERS are only just realising what this confusing button on their steering wheel really does - and it has blown their minds.

The function of the mysterious "mode" and "hold" button in such a prime position in the vehicle has baffled many motorists for years.

Although they may have often stared at it or possibly even fidgeted with it, the purpose of it has puzzled thousands of road users.

But it turns out the bizarre button can actually carry out a couple of extremely useful tasks - especially for those who like their music loud.

It usually features the words mode and hold, alongside an icon of a speaker with a line slashed through it.

Holding down the button allows drivers to turn their audio system off or on, while keeping their hands firmly on the wheel.

You can also use it to mute the sound or pause playback, and vice versa, by simply applying pressure to it.

It is a handy way to hone your concentration and get rid of the noise in an instant - or to turn off your passenger's rubbish song choice.

As well as this, you can also use the button to flick through different radio channels or stations to find your perfect playlist.

Despite many motorists already being well aware of its useful function, some Reddit users were stunned by the revelation.

One person enquired whether there was a "mute button" in cars, as he believed it would be a good addition to vehicles.

Several replies bluntly informed the poster that it had already been invented, while instructing him how to use it.

We previously told how motorists discovered what the little-known button on their dashboard is really for.
