Maya Jama has revealed that a crazed stalker once told a friend of hers that he was creeping around near their shared home.

The Love Island host who shot to fame in 2012 has spoken of the importance of not sharing every aspect of your life on social media after revealing she once shared too much.

Maya, 28, explained that the man once posed as her brother and gained access to an exclusive awards show and was eventually escorted to the TV star by security.

Speaking about her ordeal, Maya said that while at a glitzy event, she hugged the bloke upon meeting him assuming that they had met one another on a previous occasion.

Chatting to the Daily Star, she said: "So if you knew that road, you would be able to clock.

"He had DM'ed my friend who I lived with at the time, saying, 'I am near your house."

Following the terrifying ordeal, Maya said that she "became more careful," as she told fans it can "happen to anyone".

She continued: "You might not be online and you can have a stalker, everyone should be careful with what you are posting."

Years on from the ordeal, Maya has fast become one of the biggest names in television and now appears on millions of screens after taking on the Love Island gig.

She was announced as the new host after former presenter Laura Whitmore stepped down, two years after she replaced the late Caroline Flack.

But Maya believes her job on the show is much bigger now as being the first non-white host is a "big moment for all of us".

Speaking to Vogue, the star said: "Growing up, I never saw an East African woman host a show, and no Black or mixed-race woman hosts such a big primetime TV show, other than June Sarpong.

"This is definitely a big moment for all of us in that sense, and I hope it just opens way more doors for other people from similar backgrounds and cultures as myself."

Maya was born to parents Sadie and Hussein and is of Somali descent on Hussein's side, as well as Swedish descent on her mum Sadie's side.
