BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood has announced an exciting new venture related to her career as a best-selling author.

Carol, 61, has recently published her third book and now she will begin to nurture young talent as the judge of a children’s writing competition.

The popular weather presenter has been a mainstay on BBC Breakfast since 1997. But, more recently, Carol has branched out into writing, publishing Under a Green Moon in 2021, The Hotel on the Riviera in 2022, and Secrets of Villa Amore this summer.

She recently returned to the BBC Breakfast studio after an extended summer break, but now she’s taking on another new role and putting her writing expertise to good use as the judge of a Sussex-based writing competition for children.

Children between the ages of seven and 16 can enter the competition by writing a short story with the theme “Donald the Cat’s Great Adventure.”

Thrilled to be taking on this new role, Carol said: “I’m a firm believer in bringing out children’s creativity and entering this competition is a great way for them to express themselves and show off their creative skills.”

Carol will read each submission and narrow it down to her three favourites, each of which will receive prizes. The competition closes at 6pm on November 12.

The writing contest costs £2 to enter but it’s for a good cause as the fee will go to a local animal charity, Wadars, which cares for rescue animals. The money will go directly toward helping the charity look after the animals in its care as well as support the operating costs for its wildlife helpline and mobile rescue service.

Carol added: “As an animal lover myself, I was delighted to be asked to judge this competition and I look forward to reading the entries.”

Wadars fundraising manager Jenny Freeman commented: “We are very excited to be launching this short story competition and are extremely grateful to Carol for kindly agreeing to judge the winning entries for us.”

Carol has, of course, excited her loyal fans with her new role, with one commenting “Are there no ends to your talents?” on social media.

Meanwhile, alongside her new role, Carol will continue to present the weather on BBC Breakfast.

On the programme this morning, she presented the weather alongside Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, who hosted the breakfast show.

Charlie, 61, seemed amazed by Carol’s presentation of the weather, before admitting: “I wasn’t really talking about your delivery of the weather. I was just saying that is a lot of weather.”

As they were about to sign off, Naga, 48, made a cheeky dig at Carol telling her to “try harder” to impress her co-host next time.
