He has been replaced by Ashley Jensen, who is playing the new lead detective, Met Police Detective Inspector Ruth Calder.

In the new series DI Ruth will be seen returning to her native island along with DS Alison.

The pair head to Shetland in an attempt to retrieve a victim who witnessed a gangland murder, and will discover some disturbing twists while investigating the crime.

But fans were left disappointed by Jimmy's absence in the new series.

One viewer shared: "Looked forward to this but Agatha Raisen. It is putting me off can’t lie. But she’s a good actress and I’m sure after a while this is gonna wear off."

Another agreed: "Not sure about this so far."

One heartbroken fan admitted they already miss seeing Perez in the opening credits.

A more positive watcher said: "Happy that Shetland is back but I’ll miss Douglas Henshall. I hope Jimmy is happy in retirement."

One added: "So excited to have Shetland back, gonna be weird without Jimmy though."

Alison previously revealed what DI Ruth's relationship with her new colleague will be like, telling What To Watch: "It is new and fragile, and their policing styles don't always marry up.

"But these are two confident, experienced women who recognise the value of working together and pooling resources, and who respect each other, even though they don't always see eye to eye."
