HBO Max previously confirmed that The Crown’s Matt Smith and Wanderlust alum Emma D’Arcy would return to lead the second season of the Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning series House of the Dragon.

But with the first season airing back in August 2022, it’s been a long wait for fans. The new season began production this spring and was allowed to continue throughout the ongoing Hollywood strikes thanks to a few loopholes.

Corlys Velaryon actor Steve Toussaint then confirmed on Instagram that filming concluded at the end of September.

Sharing the news he wrote: “‘And that’s a wrap on Steve!’ What a blast to work with such great people!

“Now it’s in the hands of editors, SFX folk, and whoever else. Hope you like it when you eventually get to see it!”

Now HBO Max boss Casey Bloys has shared details of when exactly that will be. In a press conference yesterday the streamer chief confirmed that season 2 will come in “early summer” next year.

However, the new season does come with a major change. It will consist of eight episodes, not ten like the first season, Casey confirmed.

Thrilled with the news, many fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to celebrate the announcement.

“OMG I’m ready,” said one GOT fan.

Another commented: “Season one was too good, ready for the next.”

“Yes! This is what my soul needs,” a third fan celebrated.

“My favourite show! Let’s go!” chimed in a fourth fan, while a fifth added, “Can’t wait seriously!”

Alongside the news of the 2024 summer release date, the streaming boss revealed other exciting news for Game of Thrones fans. The next Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is in the works and will hopefully begin shooting in spring.

The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, which chronicle the story of Dunk, the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall, and Egg, the future king Aegon V Targaryen. It follows them as they wander Westeros having adventures roughly 100 years before the events of the novels.

There are no other GOT prequel concepts that are close to a green light but the streamer is working on ideas, Casey added.
