The England goalkeeper was forced off with a shoulder injury against United and could miss the rest of the season.
Newcastle are understood to be assessing transfer options ahead of the window re-opening in January, with Martin Dubravka set to deputise until a replacement is found.
Former United goalkeeper De Gea is one player on the club's shortlist, reports the Daily Mail.

The Spaniard, 33, has been searching for a club since leaving the Red Devils in the summer but would likely demand big wages.
He earned £375,000 a week at Old Trafford but is said to be keen on a switch to Newcastle so could accept a wage reduction.
Arsenal outcast Aaron Ramsdale is also thought to be open to a transfer to the north-east, states talkSPORT.
However, the club's preference is believed to be De Gea, as Ramsdale could cost a fee of around £50m.
De Gea has been linked to Real Betis and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq since leaving the Premier League.

He is even believed to have snubbed a £500,000-a-week deal at Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr.
De Gea has been spending much of his free time with his pop star wife Edurne and the couple posed for a loved up selfie in Manchester as they each enjoyed a glass of wine over the weekend.
After United's 1-0 defeat at St James' Park he took to Twitter to share a cryptic post, tweeting a cold face emoji (????) shortly after full-time.
