Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crack before the crane arm came crashing down.

Scores of emergency crews were scrambled to the scene, and two people were treated by medics at the scene.

Photos show the mangled wreckage of the equipment sitting on top of the roof.  And scaffolding at the bottom of the building has been smashed by falling debris.

One eyewitness who witnessed the collapse called emergency services as soon as it happened.

He told The Scottish Sun: “I was on Leith Walk when I heard this crack. I looked up and saw the entire arm of the crane come crashing down on the building.

“The crane came down and it looks like it caused part of the roof to cave in.

“There must have been at least 100 workers in there.

“There’s all sorts of emergency services here, all of Leith Walk has been closed down.

“This is one of the worst things I’ve seen.”

Workers have been seen watching on as blue light crews manage the incident.

It is believed major incident units and mobile command posts have all been deployed.

Cops have shut down all nearby roads and urged people to avoid the area.
