SHOCKED Scots were shaken awake after their village was rocked by an EARTHQUAKE.

The tiny town of Kilmelford, Argyll, felt the tremors in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

Experts at the British Geological Survey said the ground-shaking 5am event had a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale.

Residents of the sleepy village told how they didn't think the rumbling sound was from a quake - which had a depth of 5km.

One local told the British Geological Survey they "thought it was a military jet"

Another reported hearing "a loud, low rumble like a heavy vehicle passing".

And a third said: "It was a loud bang that woke me up".

The tremors were also felt on the Isle of Mull, Isle of Lismore and Lochgilphead.

Geologists say the UK is hit by 200-300 earthquakes every year, but tremors from only 30 of these can be felt by people. Other minor ones can only be picked up with sensitive equipment.

The BGS said: "The driving forces for earthquake activity in the UK are unclear.

"They include regional compression caused by motion of the Earth’s tectonic plates and uplift resulting from the melting of the ice sheets that covered many parts of Britain thousands of years ago."

The British Geological Survey has been approached for comment.
