Mutaev was a student at the martial arts school headed by Khabib's late father Abdulmanap.

He had posted a picture to his Instagram page alongside the UFC icon just days before his passing.

AMC Fight Nights released a statement on Telegram regarding Mutaev's death, saying: "Terrible tragedy!

"It is with deep regret that we announce the premature death of a young and promising athlete!

"Over the course of his 20 years, he managed to leave a bright mark on the world of martial arts; his bright image will forever remain in our hearts. Our condolences to the family and loved ones!"

A report from RT, via the Daily Mail, claims Mutaev was shot eight times on Gaptsakhskaya Street.

There is also believed to have been a previous attempt against his life.

Caucasian Knot reported the attack took place near Mutaev's home before he died on the way to hospital.

Their report cites "revenge" as the alleged motive behind the shooting.

An 18-year-old named Nadyrkhan Kadirkhanov has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Telegram channel Tut Dagestan elaborated on the alleged motive, with a source saying: "Mutaev took advantage of being stronger than young guys in the gym.

"He mocked the younger ones and took their belongings away from them. I don't justify the killer, but the guy's nerves simply couldn't stand the bullying."

Another allegation suggests Mutaev "severely beat" Kadirkhanov a week before the incident, as well as put out cigarettes on him after making comments made about his father.
