Later, a consultant also diagnosed the BBC radio personality with ADHD - also known as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - after they noticed particular traits of his personality.

It was reported he became obsessed with various topics such as the "planet, litter and animals".

Now he's opened up on dealing with the condition with Gabby Logan on The Mid Point podcast.

He revealed that he has been taking medication which has helped to manage the intensity of the personality disorder.

However, the presenter did admit there were moments where he felt glued in "a pit of despair".

"I got through it, ish, there are still ups and downs, but it's kind of under control," he confessed.

The star also admitted that he sought comfort with his pet pooch, a golden retriever called Maxwell has helped him through.

Nicky confessed: "When I had my breakdown, he was incredible. When I collapsed at Euston station sobbing on grass that used to be there when everything got on top with me.

"[My wife] Tina said, 'Come home come home' and he [the dog] was there, and you know when they put their heads on your chest and stuff like that. He's been amazing."

However, he also opened up on how the life changing diagnosis helped others around him to understand him better, especially his four daughters.

"I remember the girls saying, 'When we were that age we thought, Oh daddy's started weeping and crying for no reason'. That really got to me when they said that but now they understand," he revealed.

The star also confessed just how bad some of his symptoms were when he was out and out.

He revealed that he used to become almost obsessed and angry with the way people treated rubbish, saying he would "chase them around the park".

"I remember one day people had left a lot of litter with receipts and stuff like that, I got back, I was very excited with them, there was Tina and I and I said, 'Let's get onto the police'," he admitted.
