Olly Alexander admits he was 'sad and confused' during Eurovision performance

Olly Alexander has admitted he was "sad and confused" during his performance on Tuesday night.

The UK entry for this year's Eurovision Song Contest caught up with Scott Mills on the broadcaster's BBC Radio 2 show on Wednesday, hours on from taking to the stage for a televised performance of his song Dizzy.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024's first semi-final, which took place on Tuesday night, saw the UK entry Alexander receive a mixed response following his live performance in Sweden.

Some BBC viewers criticised the Brit's seemingly lacklustre vocals during his rendition of 'Dizzy' - the song he is pinning his hopes upon for some decent scores in Saturday night's final. Fans watching accused Alexander of being "off-key" and "out of tune", though some defended the 33 year old, attributing his shaky performance to the mic pack that loosened and fell off during the act.

In support of Alexander, one Twitter user, a self-proclaimed gym instructor, wrote: "As a gym instructor I know how off putting that is," and added: "An amazing performance just got elevated even higher!" Speaking on Lorraine on Wednesday morning, Olly revealed a wardrobe malfunction was behind his dodgy vocals.

He told the ITV show's host Lorraine Kelly: "Last night was amazing. It was the first time performing in the arena and on TV. It was just... yeah, it was amazing." He then revealed: "I had a slight wardrobe malfunction - my mic pack fell off - and had to improvise but that's fine - it's live TV, it happens."

Speaking to Scott Mills later in the day, Alexander admitted the malfunction threw him off his A-game. "It was very good to perform in the semi-finals as it's less pressure and don't have to worry about voting etc," he confessed to Mills, referring to the fact the UK automatically qualifies for the final.

He continued: "You don't have to worry about voting but get to experience performing live in the arena with cameras. I did have a slight wardrobe malfunction so I was a bit confused and stressed." Mills quickly reassured Alexander, telling him: "It's good it happened now."

Talk then turned to Alexander's staging, with Mills stating some Eurovision fans "are saying it's the best stage ever!" Alexander gushed: "It's the most rehearsed thing I've done. I love it. I'm so, so proud of this performance. It's very bold, unapologetic and, some may say, risque."

The Eurovision Song Contest has sparked controversy by announcing they may ban Palestinian flags and symbols during the event in Sweden, amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which has now entered its seventh month.

Olly Alexander, the lead singer of Years and Years, expressed his feelings of being "overwhelmed" by the situation. Speaking to The Times, he said: "Obviously there are a lot of things I wish were different. And this is so much bigger than me and Eurovision, it really is. Obviously, I wish there wasn't a war or this insane humanitarian crisis."

With an estimated 35,000 fatalities in Gaza, where around 70% are believed to be women and children, the pop sensation added: "I wish for peace and I have found this experience, at times, extremely... I've just felt really sad and distressed. But I still believe it's a good thing when people come together for entertainment. That's why I wanted to do Eurovision."

The singer confessed to the Mirror about his all-consuming focus on the upcoming competition, revealing: "I go to bed thinking of Eurovision, I dream about Eurovision, I wake up thinking about Eurovision. It's just constantly, constantly in my head. I feel like I've gone through everything that could possibly go wrong, every eventual possibility, it's happened in my head already in one way or another. So I don't know anymore. I'm just overwhelmed."

he 2024 Eurovision Song Contest got underway on Tuesday night, with the show opened by Eleni Foureira, a former Cyprus contestant, who dazzled the stage with her glittering outfit and backup dancers dressed in black.

Alexander rocked the Eurovision stage in a striking outfit of a white singlet, red trousers, and boots, delivering his debut performance with an innovative upside-down locker room setup. The cameras at Malmo Arena in Sweden were cleverly rotated to create a dizzying effect as Alexander and his dancers performed.
