The nightclub which hired the self-identified real-life Martha from Baby Reindeer to appear at the venue has cancelled the meet and greet.

It was recently announced by Kasbah Nightclub in Coventry that the woman claiming to be the inspiration for the fictional character Martha Scott depicted in the hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer would be appearing at the venue to take selfies and sign autographs in a " world exclusive" on Saturday (May 18).

Their Facebook announcement read: "She will be signing autographs, taking selfies and she may also take a lucky reindeer home to hang her curtains!" It received a lot of backlash from fans who called the decision to hire her "f***ed up" and "disappointing and strange."

The announcement quickly went viral and it was recently revealed they had to cancel the entire meet-and-greet as it was deemed "unsafe" by the promoter. Kasbah's Facebook post read: "Unfortunately, the promoter of this Saturday's meet & greet with [Martha] has deemed the event unsafe and cancelled the appearance due to the negative publicity.

"We would however, like to thank him for considering our venue and in particular we'd like to thank Metro News, The Daily Mail, BBC News online, Coventry Live, Birmingham Mail, ITV news, The Independent, NME, Glasgow Live, MSN, The Sun, The Daily Mirror, Warwick Boar, Business Insider, The Tab, CNN News and numerous Instagram meme pages with a combined total of 33 million followers for their support and free publicity, you guys are the gift that keeps on giving [smiling emoji and winking emoji].

"Open as normal this Friday, Saturday and Monday from 10:30pm. Simply quote "Martha" at the front door on Saturday to receive £1 off entry before midnight!" Many took to the comment section to laugh off the situation as a PR stunt.

One user wrote: "I thought the whole thing was a troll event anyway," while another added: "Very smart! Fair f***ing play to you. Your PR guy needs a f***ing raise!!" Their original announcement had people accusing the club of giving the "real-life" Baby Reindeer character "exactly what she wants".

Another suggested Kasbah Nightclub had made a "disappointing and strange" decision to host her. One former club-goer wrote: "I used to go to Kasbah/Colly twice a week. It's actually a decent club. I have no idea why they feel like they need to do this." The incident left other users "very cross" on Twitter/X, with one writing: "Glamorising stalking. Am I missing something here or is this seriously messed up?"

Richard Gadd wrote and starred in the series - which is based on Gadd's real-life experience of being stalked - as struggling comedian Donny Dunn, who comes across a woman named Martha, played by Jessica Gunning. Their relationship takes a turn when she begins to stalk Donny relentlessly. The character Martha in the dramatisation ended up sending Donny more than 41,000 emails, 744 tweets, 100 pages of letters and 350 hours of voicemails.

The same woman who was supposedly meant to appear at Kasbah was recently interviewed by Piers Morgan. She said about the dramatisation: "It's completely untrue. Very, very defamatory to me, very career-damaging. And I wanted to rebut that completely on this show. I'm not a stalker. I've not been to jail, I've not got injunctions. And this is just complete nonsense."

During the interview with Piers, the woman claimed several things were fabrications within the Netflix show - including that Gadd had never offered her a free cup of tea, and she never messaged him as much as the character in the drama is portrayed as doing. She claimed she only sent a 'handful' of emails.
