Foot peel masks have become a viral sensation, promising baby-soft feet with minimal effort.

But a podiatrist is sounding the alarm on the potential dangers lurking behind the popular beauty trend. Nicki, known as @thepodlifts on social media, is cautioning the public about the health risks associated with foot peel masks. In a viral video, Nicki explains that these foot peel masks can actually cause serious harm.

"The mask doesn’t know the difference between healthy and dead skin," she warns. This inability to separate can lead to a range of health issues, from mild irritation to severe medical conditions. The most concerning risks are for individuals with underlying health conditions. Nicki said that people with diabetes or those who are ill need to be particularly vigilant.

People can be exposed to a "foot ulcer or foot wound." These open wounds are not only painful but also provide an entry point for infections. The situation can escalate quickly as Nicki notes in extreme cases. What starts as a simple foot peel can lead to severe infections, sepsis, and even amputation.

One viewer recounted a particularly harrowing experience, saying: "I once used a foot peel and my skin had chemical burns." Another person shared: "I have four autoimmune conditions and pancreatic disease. Foot peels cause second to third-degree burns on my feet." A third user described their ordeal: "I used a foot mask peel a couple of weeks ago. My feet peeled like crazy which is what I wanted, but I've had hives since, and now the bottoms of my feet are so itchy.”

A medical professional also weighed in, emphasising the serious risks. "I’m a medic and we see this all the time. The smallest cuts can lead to amputation," they warned. “All of my shoes gave me blisters after a foot peel, so annoying," complained another viewer. Some viewers are already taking precautions. "I just took mine off now," one watcher admitted.

According to the doctors at the Foot Ankle Centre, most foot peels contain a combination of "alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, and essential oils." While these ingredients can be effective for exfoliation, they also carry potential dangers. One of the primary concerns is the risk of over-exfoliation. Overdoing it with foot peels can lead to "blisters" and "skin infections," which can be incredibly painful and may require medical treatment.

The risks are significantly higher for individuals with diabetes. High glucose levels in diabetics can "affect the body's ability to heal wounds," making them more prone to serious complications from using foot peels. The experts emphasise that those with diabetes should exercise extreme caution and possibly avoid foot peels altogether.

In addition to the acids, other ingredients like "alcohol" and "certain fragrances" can cause issues. Alcohol can dry out the skin, leading to irritation and increased sensitivity. For those with allergies, these fragrances can trigger reactions ranging from mild itching to severe rashes. Expectant mothers are also advised to be cautious, as certain chemicals in foot peels could potentially affect their health and the health of their unborn baby.
