A guest on the Today Show in the US has shared details of a clever hack to avoid falling foul of a heatwave this week.

The handy tip, which requires two household items, will help sunshine lovers in staying cool and avoiding dehydration. With temperatures finally soaring after a dismally wet spring, its important we don't get carried away outdoors following the change in weather.

"Mama says don't go outside with wet hair during the winter, but in the summer apparently that's a great way to keep your head cool," the guest advised in a clip that was shared on TikTok, before continuing: "A shirt that is wet if you have to work outside or a portable fan with a mister will also help."

She then explained her menthol trick, which can be created in the home, saying: "A cooling spray tip - it's an aerosol spray... sometimes you find it in a first aid kit. It's made with active ingredients like menthol - you spray it on your skin and it cools you down instantly.

"You can make your own - you just add a few drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle and spay that onto you."

The woman went on to highlight a number of other simple but effective techniques, meanwhile, adding that "dunking hands and feet into cold water" is another useful way of cooling off. "Your wrists have a bunch of pulse points with blood vessels close to the skin - that'll cool you down quickly," she explained.

"And of course, hydrate, hydrate. Drink all day long. Even when you're not thirsty." One of NBC's presenters responded with the strappy catchline: "You know what they say in my house? Hydrate or die-drate."

Sun lovers are set to enjoy an incredible 32C heat over the coming days thanks to the movement of a jet stream to the north of the UK allowing air to move up from the continent. "An increasingly hot week of weather to come," said Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern on Monday (June 24).

He continued: "By Wednesday it is hotter again across the south with 30C possible across the Midlands, the South East and East Anglia, mid to high 20Cs elsewhere. That could spark a few thunderstorms for Wales and the South West which certainly is an area of the forecast we will be keeping a close eye on."
