A RAGING inferno burnt through a block of flats in east London as 70 firefighters fought to extinguish the massive blaze.

Shocking footage from the scene showed clouds of orange and black smoke pouring from the building, which looks to be at least 15 storeys high.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called out to the scene in Rymill street, north Woolwich.

The London Fire Brigade said their officers took 30 emergency calls about the blaze last night.

It hit the tenth floor of the huge block of flats on Thursday evening.

Fire crews asked the public to avoid the area while they tried to put out the inferno.

The first emergency call made about the fire was just after 10:30pm.

Fire crews from Plaistow, Barking, East Ham, Poplar and other nearby areas rushed to the scene.

The cause of the blaze is unknown but officials are probing the inferno.

A picture taken from further away showed plumes of smoke filling the sky.

London Fire Brigade told The Sun: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Rymill Street in North Woolwich.

"Part of a five-roomed flat on the 10th floor was alight.

"Three people left the building before the Brigade arrived, whilst others remained in their unaffected flats.

"They are being treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

"The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took almost 30 calls to the blaze.

"The Brigade was called at 2232 and the fire was under control by 2350.

"Fire crews from Plaistow, Barking, East Ham, Poplar and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
