A couple found dead in a luxury hotel in Mexico thought they had food poisoning and had been to hospital.

Abby Lutz and John Heathco went to the hospital just days before they were found dead inside their hotel room in the Baj Peninsula, Mexico.

Abby, 28, and John, 41, died from “intoxication by substance yet to be determined,” officials have since said.

There was no sign of violence found on the couple's bodies and it is estimated they had been dead for around 10 to 11 hours before they were found by police.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

"We will continue to cooperate with authorities as they look into the cause of this terrible tragedy. The safety and security of our guests and colleagues is always a top priority.

Our family would be so grateful for any help. Abby was the most beautiful soul and we will miss her so much."

The family of Abby said in a statement to ABC news: "We are shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved Abby. Abby had an adventurous spirit and a wonderfully kind heart. She loved to travel, see new places, and share her zeal for life with those around her. We ask for your thoughts and prayers for our family during this very difficult time."
