DEAR DEIDRE: When counselling sessions revealed repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse, I felt shellshocked and I couldn’t tell anyone.

I remembered that my cousin had messed around with me when I was about 11 and he was 15. At the time I hadn’t stopped him.

I’m now a 44-year-old man, and my partner is 42.

I wrote to you, Deidre, for support. I wasn’t sure if what had happened was actually rape.

And I needed advice on whether to tell my family or partner - or even the police.

 I’m a 44-year-old man, and my partner is 42.

You told me that what had happened was indeed rape, as I was too young to consent.

You sent me your support pack, Abused as a Child, and suggested I talk through my concerns with a rape counsellor before talking to my loved ones.

Realising I’d been raped opened my eyes. I talked things through with a counsellor and then with my family and partner, who were very supportive.

I feel much stronger and more positive about the situation now, even if I can’t change the past.

Thank you Deidre.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m pleased that you are now getting the help you need.

I hope this is the start of your healing journey.
