Alex Jones has told how she misses putting her three young children to bed due to her role as The One Show host.

But despite having to juggle her job and family life, the 47-year-old insists she will stay on the BBC programme for as long as she can. Alex, who celebrates 14 years on the show in August, has Teddy, seven, Kit, five, and two-year-old Annie with husband Charlie Thomson, who she wed in 2015.

She said: “I suffer from terrible mum guilt, but that’s the nature of my work. All I can do is my best. I feel massive guilt about not being able to put the kids to bed every night. I tell them I’d love to be able to read them a story every night, but my work happens at that time, and I have to work so we can do nice things at weekends.. There’s no way around it.

“I adore the chaos of family life. Being a mum is the best thing, and the kids are so funny. I think you have to be aware of how fleeting it is, having young kids. I certainly don’t want to wish it away.” Alex had an unusual tip for parents trying to get a moment’s peace away from the kids – hiding in their cars. She said: “I’ve been known to drive to Sainsbury’s car park, wind back the seat, lie down and close my eyes for a while.”

In an interview with woman&home, Alex also spoke about her future on The One Show. She said: “People ask me what I want to do next. I feel like saying, ‘I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do. Why would I hanker after another job?’ Of course, I’ve ambitions to do other things, I love making documentaries.

“But I’ll be there [on The One Show] for as long as they’ll have me and it will always be my main job.”

August’s woman&home is on sale June 25.
