Screenwriter Jimmy McGovern penned Time season one with him bringing on board Helen Black, writer of the BAFTA-nominated Life and Death in the Warehouse, to write season two.

The second outing of the show is comprised of three one-hour-long episodes and will be directed by Andrea Harkin, the director behind The Confessions of Frannie Langton and The Trial Of Christine Keeler.

It is made by BBC Studios and co-produced by BritBox International for North America.

Jodie leads the cast in this cycle set in a women's prison.

Previously announced to join the former Time Lord Jodie in the show is The Silent Twins' actor Tamara Lawrance, The Last of Us sensation Bella Ramsey with Downton Abbey's Siobhan Finneran returning as series one favourite prison chaplain Marie-Louise.

Adding to the acting skills showcased already the BBC has announced today some brand new talent joining the show.

Alma's Not Normal BAFTA-award winner Sophie Willan will join Jodie along with Shetland's Julie Graham, Waterloo Road's Alicia Forde, Robin Hood's Lisa Millett and The Responder's Faye McKeever.

The cast announcement is completed by The Girl Before's Kayla Meikle, This Is Going to Hurt's James Corrigan, SAS Rogue Heroes' Nicholas Nunn and Unforgotten's Maimuna Memon.

The show's synopsis reads: "Told through the lens of three very different inmates, Time is a moving and high-stakes portrayal of life inside a women's prison.

"Arriving at Carlingford Prison on the same day, Kelsey (Bella Ramsey), Orla (Jodie Whittaker) and Abi (Tamara Lawrance) are thrown together to face an unfamiliar world. But even with the ever-present threat of violence within its walls, they discover that an unexpected sense of community, and a shared understanding, still might be possible."

Time series one is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Series two is coming soon to BBC One and iPlayer.
