Sleep expert urges you to stop counting sheep and try 'effective' mental method

Counting sheep is an age-old suggestion for anyone struggling to fall asleep, but have you ever wondered if it actually works?

A sleep expert has claimed these fluffy animals are not what they're cracked up to be when it comes to a goodnight's rest, suggesting that it's time to switch up the tired tradition.

Rosey Davidson, a sleep consultant and founder of Just Chill Baby Sleep, instead recommends an 'alternative mental strategy' that will help you drift off.

This involves imagining that you're somewhere else - whether it's on a sun lounger abroad, or down at the local park.

She told the The Mirror: "We're often told to 'try counting sheep' or to use relaxing scents or drinks to help us fall asleep, but these approaches often fail to help us shut off the thoughts that stop us falling asleep.

"As a sleep consultant, I often recommend visualisation techniques to help people struggling with their sleep achieve a restful night. At its core, visualisation involves imagining soothing scenes, environments, or pleasant experiences. While it might sound simplistic, the science behind visualisation and its impact on the brain is anything but.”

Rosey explains that visualisation works as a distraction technique, diverting our attention away from the racing thoughts and anxieties that may keep us up at night.

She continued: "Research has shown that this practice activates regions of the brain associated with relaxation. As a result, our bodies respond by releasing calming neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which promote feelings of tranquillity and reduce stress levels.

"Regular practice can actually rewire the brain, strengthening neural pathways associated with relaxation and improving our ability to unwind naturally. Over time, this can lead to a more consistent and restorative sleep routine.”
